Septima Poinsette Clark is known as the "Queen Mother" of the Civil Rights Movement, she developed "Citizenship Schools" that helped thousands of African Americans gain the literacy skills needed to vote.

Washington also partnered with Julius Rosenwald to construct over 5,000 schools, shops, and teacher homes for African American children across the south.
